EMDR- What is it?

What is it: Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing. It’s bilateral stimulation to help the healing of core negative beliefs and trauma. What does that mean? Read on.

Where is it: In-Office Only, St. Paul.

Who is it for: Individuals who have an out-of-control inner critic. People who have tried to “move on” and can’t. Those wanting lasting healing.

What are the benefits: Increased ability to handle difficult situations, regulate self and emotions, tolerate tension in relationships, and decrease distressing memories, flashbacks, or nightmares.

“I DON’T KNOW EXACTLY WHAT IS HAPPENING, BUT IT WORKS”

That is what the majority of my clients say.

Here is a quick overview: Your brain stores everyday events and memories in a primary neural network. They are in chronological order, and you can recall them when you want.
Upsetting events get stored in separated, isolated networks. Those are not in chronological order, and they intrude in your life whenever they want. They cause your heart to race and you feel angry or upset. Instantly, you can remember every detail, and you feel like you are back in that moment.

SO THIS IS THERAPY FOR TRAUMA?

Yes AND research shows that our brains categorize many events as trauma. Accidents, betrayals, abuses, natural disasters, and other shocking events are traumatic. However, even if you think, “Well that isn’t me,” EMDR could still be the key to unlocking negative core beliefs influencing your life.

WHAT IS A NEGATIVE CORE BELIEF?

A negative core belief is a repeated damaging thought about yourself. They form after an accumulation of negative events.
When you are having a good day, you would never say these statements about yourself. They come out in the hard, darker moments. It can sound like:

  • “I can’t get anything right.”

  • “I always mess up relationships.”

  • “I can never do enough.”

  • “I always say the wrong thing.”

  • “I don’t deserve good things.”

HOW DOES EMDR HELP?

EMDR can quiet the inner critic and help the unwanted memories and thoughts “fade away,” as one client described.  Many clients have gone from feeling on edge, anxious, and fearful to more grounded, safe, and self-regulated with the help of EMDR.
