Frequently Asked Questions

Getting Started Questions

  • Consultations are available both virtually and in-person. Come in and get a feel for the office or use the convenient video conferencing platform.

  • For the consultation, be ready to share what you are wanting support with. I will ask a few questions about what is going on, how long it's been happening, and if there are any extenuating circumstances. I'll answer any questions you have and if we both feel it's a good fit you can schedule your first appointment.

  • Schedule a consultation here. I’ll get back to you within 24 hours Monday through Friday.

  • Therapy appointments are available both virtually and in-person. Choose the option that works best with your schedule. Hybrid options are available too. For example, clients can choose to be in person one week and virtual the next.

  • The best course of action is to schedule a free, 20-minute consultation. However, if you are ready to get started, you can schedule your first therapy session here.

  • Appointments are available Monday through Thursday between 10 AM and 5 PM Central Time.

  • Sessions are 50 minutes long.

Who I Work With Questions

  • Most people would rather avoid conflict. Conflict doesn't feel good. But when your partner brings up a problem in your relationship, what is your reaction?

    A) "Sure, let's go on a walk. I'll get my coat."
B)"Is there a ditch I can go dig for 12 hours in 100 degree heat while fire ants bite my ankles instead?"

That second one is conflict avoidance.

  • Yes. Some women have experienced dads or partners they describe as "having a big ego" or an "alpha personality." They learned to make themselves small to avoid making men angry. Women seek me out when they want to speak up but the fear of someone else's anger keeps them quiet.
You don't have to live like this.

EMDR is an effective tool in changing these patterns. Reach out and let's talk.

  • Ten years ago, I remember my wife describing sending up a "test balloon" with her new White therapist. This meant she said something small about her mixed-race, Black identity to see if it was a truly safe space. Even when a therapist says the right thing, BIPOC individuals notice the subtle shifts in energy when a White person becomes uncomfortable.
I could tell you about the BIPOC trauma trainings I've done, the many BIPOC clients I've had, or 15 years of being married to a Black woman. But that is all about me. And it doesn’t tell you if I do my own inner work.
The only thing that matters is if you feel safe with me.

Meet with me and see how you feel.

  • Yes. Quite a few actually. People with these identities have the added stress of marginalization. Not to mention a lack of mainstream, positive models of queer relationships.
My clients want to show up as their authentic selves. However, an overtaxed nervous system from feeling unsafe in the world causes them to shut down or blow up when conflict arises. And worst of all, they beat themselves up and hear the loud voice of shame afterward.

Anyone who wants to feel safer opening up or be able to receive feedback from their partner without the shame vortex creeping in, let me support you.

Payment and Insurance Questions

  • Each session is $250. There is no added charge for the intake appointment.

  • If available, clients use an HSA, HRA, or FSA to cover the cost of appointments. Debit and credit cards are also accepted.

  • Reuben is an out-of-network provider with all insurance companies. Therefore you are able to use your out-of-network benefits.

  • It is easier than it can seem.

    1. Call the number on the back of your card and ask:
      A) What is my out-of-network deductible?
      B) How much is remaining before I meet my deductible?
      C) What percentage of my sessions will be covered after that?

    2. Attend your session with Reuben and receive a Superbill.

    3. Submit the Superbill to your insurance company.

    4. After your deductible is met, your insurance company will reimburse you directly. Some insurance companies have a direct deposit option available, straight to your bank account.

  • A Superbill is a billing statement from a licensed healthcare provider. It shows your out-of-pocket health care expenses. Reuben provides monthly Superbills sent out automatically for any client that requests them. Many insurance companies have an easy way to submit these statements and get reimbursed.
